Pathways Kitchener had a wonderful time on Saturday February 8th with youth at The Real African Culture Exhibition Showcase at University of Waterloo. The event is hosted by University of Waterloo’s African Student Association, and this year’s theme was “Dwennimmen” (directly translating to “the horns of a ram”). Originating from the Twi language of Ghana, ‘Dwennimmen’ represents humility and strength, expressing the concept of acquiring true wisdom through a willingness to grow.
30 students attended the event with staff at Hagey Hall. While there, the group split into 2 before the performance. 10 students went to watch women’s and men’s basketball games! The remaining students enjoyed an art gallery, vendor booths, a photobooth, and some delicious meat pies and puff puffs (a tasty fried pastry)!
After the gallery, the entire group watched beautiful performances on stage that included spoken word poetry, modelling, signing, piano, dancing, and a short film; all amazing and inspiring for our youth (and us) to see!
We connected with students throughout the event and they expressed “This is so fun” “I am having such a great time” “I am loving this” “this was awesome”. Some students even approached the performers after the show to tell them how much they loved it. After the stage performances, we all enjoyed some jollof rice, veggies, plantain, and chicken! It was also a really wonderful opportunity to connect with the youth outside of school/regular programming setting, and we were able to get to know more youth from participating in this experience.
